Updated on August 19th

August has arrived with another set of free games to get with those paid subscriptions or apps. This article will contain a list of free games for August 2021 varying by platform (PlayStation, Xbox, or PC).

As a reminder, Epic Games won’t announce which game is free until the week prior. So, I will be updating this article weekly. Without further ado, let’s begin.

PlayStation Plus is a subscription that offers 3 PS4 games this month. Disclaimer: If your subscription expires, the games are blocked without renewal or buying the game separately.

For August 2021, the PlayStation Plus player base will be able to download:

  • Nier: Automata (PS4) (August 3rd until November 1st)
  • Ghostrunner (PS4) (August 3rd until November 1st)
  • Undertale (PS4) (August 3rd until November 1st)

Undertale is one of the best RPGs in gaming. The main reason is the expectation subversion of it. What can be expected from an RPG can’t be expected in Undertale, and that is the most appealing thing about it. Long story short, Undertale should get a free spot in someone’s library. Not as much as Nier. There are too many good things to say about this game that makes me wonder why I haven’t reviewed the game yet. Surprised to say, Nier: Automata has my endorsement.

Xbox Live Gold is a subscription that offers two Xbox One games and a combination between two Xbox 360 games and one original Xbox game. Disclaimer: Any games obtained will be permanently added to the user’s library even after the subscription. All free 360 and original Xbox games will be automatically backward-compatible with the Xbox One and Xbox Series.

For August 2021, the Xbox Live Gold players will be able to download:

  • Xbox 360:
    • Lost Planet 3 (August 1st until 15th)
    • Garou: Mark of the Wolves (August 16th until 31st)
  • Xbox One:
    • Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break (July 16th until August 15th)
    • Darksiders III (August 1st until 31st)
    • Yooka-Laylee (August 16th until September 15th)

If you wanted to play Darksiders III on Xbox Game Pass, it’s a little late due to being removed a few months ago. This is probably the best option outside of buying the game outright, and it can never leave your library if you already own it. As for Yooka-Laylee, it’s a great game to grab if you’re a big fan of Banjo-Kazooie. It’s a spiritual successor to the game before Rare was remade into making games for the Xbox Kinect.

Prime Gaming (formerly Twitch Prime) is available to all Amazon Prime members, and it gives PC games and DLC to users each month. Disclaimer: Any games or DLC obtained will be permanently added to the user’s library even after the Prime subscription.

To the PC master race for August 2021 (between August 1st until September 1st), you will receive:

  1. Free until September 1st:
    1. Battlefield V on Origin
    2. Lost Horizon 2
    3. Another Lost Phone: Laura’s Story
    4. Planet Alpha
    5. A Normal Lost Phone
    6. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
    7. Metamorphosis
    8. Secret Files: Tunguska

Lastly, we got the Epic Games Store also for the PC. Disclaimer: Any games obtained will be added to the user’s library even after the free period. Epic Games Store doesn’t require a paid subscription of any kind.

PC players for August 2021 will also be able to get:

  • A Plague Tale: Innocence (August 5th until 12th)
  • Minit (August 5th until 12th)
  • Rebel Galaxy (August 12th until 19th)
  • Void Bastards (August 19th until 26th)
  • Yooka-Laylee (August 19th until 26th)
  • Automachef (August 26th until September 2nd)

August looks to be a solid month for Playstation, Xbox. On Xbox, Darksiders III is a great AAA game if you’re looking for straight-up action. For Playstation, go play Nier. I don’t know what else to say without spoiling it.

That will do it for this month. Make sure you come back here for any updates. While you’re at it, make sure you subscribe to me or follow me on Twitter @_urgegaming and check out the free games from last month. I hope you and your loved ones have a blessed day and a cultural month. Peace.
